For the more than 2 billion worldwide active users of TikTok,  it is no longer just an “entertainment” or “kill the time” type of platform; it has also become a major source of all types of information, including one that rules our society, political information. Through its powerful algorithm, the app constantly recommends videos based on the user’s interests, searches, and recent interactions on the app, shaping the content they consume every day. As political videos become more popular online, many people are beginning to question whether TikTok is influencing public opinion more than traditional news, radios, magazines, and other sources ever have. This has created an important debate about unreliable sources, propaganda, misinformation, and the role of social media in modern democracy.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding TikTok is the way its algorithm can brutally affect political views on people's opinions. Because the app promotes content that receives high engagement, users are often exposed to videos that reinforce their existing beliefs. This can create “echo chambers,” where people mainly see opinions similar to their own and rarely encounter different perspectives. As usual, political misinformation or any other type of content spreads quickly on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and X. These famous “30-seconds” short videos are often shared without context, sometimes on purpose making it easier for false or misleading information to go viral and successfully influence viewers' perspectives or points of view.

Another major issue that is  not really addressed is TikTok’s connection to China through its parent company, ByteDance. Some governments express a rational fear that user data could be accessed by foreign authorities or that political content could be manipulated for strategic political purposes to influence the content viewers consume. Because of these concerns, several countries have restricted or attempted to ban TikTok, especially on government devices. The majority of those supporters who are in favor of these bans have the same argument, which is to protect national security. However critics on the other hand believe that banning social media platforms can limit freedom of expression and set a dangerous example for censorship.

The controversy surrounding TikTok reflects a larger political issue in the digital age: the balance between national security and freedom of speech. Social media platforms now have the power to influence elections, political movements, and public opinion on a global scale. While TikTok allows people to share ideas and become politically aware, it also raises serious concerns about misinformation and foreign influence. As technology continues to shape society, governments and citizens must decide how to protect democracy without restricting free expression online.
